Chapter Fourteen

The sound behind her grew increasingly annoying. Her eyes went to the rearview mirror. At first she thought she imagined the uniquely dimpled fedora.

“Oh, bother!”

How was it the man was never about when she needed him and always about when she meant to avoid him? It was imperative that she discover some means to clear Dash of murder charges. That task would be impossible if Zebulon Masterson was near. Then again, what if the special agent meant to inform her that Dash was already in custody?

She slammed her foot down on the brake pedal and pulled to the side of the street. She was out of the coupe a moment later. The two of them confronted each other between their vehicles as traffic flowed by in both directions.

“Didn’t you hear me trying to get your attention?” he asked.

The sight of his dark brown eyes reminded her how long it had been since she last saw him. She spoke without thinking. “I had something on my mind.”

“Which was?” he demanded.

She hedged. “I just assisted the police with finding an automobile bandit.”

“So I heard.” He scanned the area around them. “Why are you here?”

“You blared your horn until I stopped,” she reminded him. When he eyed the large building beside them suspiciously, she quickly added more. “Besides that, I had to stop at the courthouse at any rate.”

His eyes locked onto her face. “Why?”

It was an effort to keep her features smooth. “The mayor volunteered me to help with a community picnic.”

She found his laughter annoying. “I cannot imagine what you find so funny.”

“Only you would take on such a task.” He was grinning as he stared at her but it faded a moment later. “Far better you worry about throwing a party for an entire city than get involved in a murder.”

“Dorothea Hoyt was my friend,” she said stiffly.

“I’m sorry.” He sounded sincere. “Can you tell me anything about her?”

She sifted carefully through the information to best determine what she might reveal without implicating Dash. “We haven’t been as close since we graduated from college, but we kept in touch. I spoke with a mutual friend who dined with Dorothea last evening. She mentioned seeing Elton.”

Zeb was immediately on alert. “Where?”

“At the Hoyt home. His arrival was unbeknownst to the other guests and interrupted the evening. Earle was called away to speak with Elton. Maureen happened to see them on her way from using the ladies’ room.”

“Maureen Wedderburn?” At her nod, he continued. “I spoke with her as well. She didn’t mention it.”

“She was either in shock or she simply didn’t realize the potential importance of seeing one business man speaking to another. I’m certain her own husband has done the same. I couldn’t tell you how often my father or brothers have done so at their homes.”

“Yes, of course,” he murmured. “There’s no telling what information has been kept from us in the investigation for just such reasons. Unfortunately, it means that mysteries surrounding Dorothea Hoyt’s death remain so until we ferret the details out.
